Brahms: Piano Trios Nos. 1-3 (Complete)
Emanuel Ax (piano), Yo-Yo Ma (cello), Leonidas Kavakos (violin)
The cellist Yo-Yo Ma and his long-time collaborator, pianist Emanuel Ax, have joined forces with violinist Leonidas Kavakos to record all three of Brahms’ piano trios. These three artists have each been acclaimed for their interpretations of Brahms, as soloists and as colleagues but this is the first recording that they have made together.
This CD contains some strong, expansive accounts of these piano trios, the soloists combine most effectively and appear to really enjoy playing these works together. Admirers of Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax and Leonidas Kavakos need not hesitate in purchasing this new release. However there are a number of performances on the market that get closer to the heart of the music and this release does not come close to our favourite recording by the Beaux Arts Trio.
