Van Cliburn: An American Wins In Russia

Van Cliburn (piano) with various orchestras and conductors

Among the gems to be found in this reasonably priced 10-CD set  from Profil Medien are the following:

  • Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor, Op. 23 with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kirill Kondrashin
  • Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major, Op. 73 ‘Emperor’ with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Fritz Reiner
  • Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major, Op. 83 with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kirill Kondrashin
  • Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Fritz Reiner
  • Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30 with the Symphony of the Air conducted by Kirill Kondrashin
  • Chopin: Études (12), Op. 10 and Études (12), Op. 25
  • Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsodies, S244 Nos. 1-19

The recordings date back to the late 1950s and early 1960s but the sound quality is more than adequate.

This release provides a great introduction to the outstanding pianism of the first American contestant ever to win the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, which Van Cliburn did in 1958 during the middle of the ‘Cold War’. Strongly recommended!
