Fine conclusion to Debussy Song Cycle

Debussy Songs Volume 4

Lucy Crowe (soprano), Malcolm Martineau (piano) with Jennifer France (soprano), Christopher Maltman (baritone), Lucy Wakeford (harp)

It is apt that Hyperion should release the final volume in this wonderful series during the year in which we celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the death of the French, impressionistic composer Claude Debussy. No doubt this will mark the start of a flurry of Debussy discs but this is likely to stand out from the crowd.

Malcolm Martineau is deservedly gaining a reputation as an outstanding accompanist not least due to his performances throughout this series. On this disc it is Lucy Crowe who takes on the majority of the songs and she contributes great energy and emotion to the proceedings.

This is a fitting finale to the series and, like each of the the three preceding issues, it deserves a place in the collection of all lovers of Debussy’s songs. Superb singing, a fine accompanist and excellent sound quality.
