The Spanish conductor Jesús López Cobos died, last Friday, in Berlin at the age of 78. Jesús López Cobos was best known as the conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, where he was music director from 1986 to 2001, and as a conductor of opera. Though he had been suffering from cancer for some time, López Cobos continued to maintain a busy conducting schedule until the end of his life. His most recent recording, made in May 2016, is of Sinfonía Córdoba & Fulgores by the contemporary Spanish composer, Lorenzo Palomo and has just been released on Naxos.
Our favourite recording conducted by Jesús López Cobos is one that includes Respighi’s Church Windows, Brazilian Impressions and Roman Festivals recorded with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra on Telarc.
It is well worth a listen on Spotify.
