Bruckner: Symphony No 6 in A major
Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Bernard Haitink
Bruckner’s Symphony No. 6 in A major is difficult to get just right; even for experienced Brucknerians. However on this release Haitink gets the tempos just right for me and with the Bavarian orchestra he delivers an account that positively sings at times. Overall there is a pleasing coherence to the account and the woodwind solos are particularly worth mentioning. The strings play beautifully and the brass make their presence felt without being over the top. At times the timpani could have been more prominent (at least on my system) when marking out funereal time.
Overall a successful performance that has generally been captured well by the sound engineers.
