Heimweh – Schubert Lieder
Anna Lucia Richter (soprano), Gerold Huber (piano), Matthias Schorn (clarinet)∗
The young German soprano Anna Lucia Richter, born in 1990, received her first
singing lessons from her mother Regina Dohmen before commencing studies with Prof. Kurt Widmer in Basel and, in 2007, becoming a junior student of Ms. Prof. Klesie Kelly-Moog at the Cologne Conservatory.
For her first release on the Pentatone label¹ Anna Lucia Richter replicates repertoire first presented live in January 2019 with Gerold Huber at the Philharmonie Luxembourg, and also at the Konzerthaus Dortmund. This recital explores the heart-wrenching, timeless and universal feeling of ‘Homesickness’ through a collection of Schubert songs which approach Heimweh from several perspectives: from that of queens, young girls and shepherds to that of soldiers, dwarfs and gravediggers.
You can hear Anna Lucia Richter performing track 6 in the below YouTube video.
Anna Lucia Richter has a beautiful, light soprano voice that has been trained to perfection and she utilises this to deliver these songs with considerable insight and emotional intelligence. She is joined by her regular accompanist, the pianist Gerold Huber² whose sensitivity and subtlety add much to the overall success of these pieces. By their very nature these songs are all somewhat bleak but in this outstanding recital there is not a hint of monotony: each song is differentiated by subtle nuances of colour and the occasional use of tasteful ornamentation as in Goethe’s An den Mond, D259, for example.
This is a tremendous recital, that for me, ended all too quickly. I hope that there is more Schubert to come from this splendid pairing who seem so naturally accomplished in this repertoire. Combine that with the usual high quality sound from Pentatone and you get a CD that is more than worthy of its five star rating!
∗ On Der Hirt auf dem Felsen, D965 only.
¹ Anna Lucia Richter’s debut solo CD appeared on Channel Classics in 2015.
² Huber is also the regular accompanist of the baritone Christian Gerhaher.
