The New Year Concerts: 1951–54
Wiener Philharmoniker, Clemens Krauss
As we approach the annual New Year Concert in Vienna it seems highly appropriate to briefly review this reissue on Decca Eloquence.
Clemens Krauss conducted the first New Year’s Day concert in 1939, and continued to lead the occasion on each new year until his death in May 1954. The second half of the 1954 concert was the first to be recorded for commercial release. Prior to that Krauss and the Vienna Philharmonic had gone into the studio in the summer to create a disc for release after the annual concert had been broadcast on the radio. Thus this 2CD set, that contains works recorded between 1951 and 1954, is of great historical interest.
The recording quality is good and these pieces by members of the Strauss family are beautifully played. These are performances guaranteed to bring a smile to your face on the darkest of winter days. Thoroughly recommended.
