Today marks the 109th anniversary of the birth of the legendary Russian violinist, David Oistrakh (30 September 1908 – 24 October 1974).
For many, Oistrakh remains the violinistic ideal. His winning combination of tonal sumptuousness, clear interpretative focus, musical humility and effortless technical poise across a broad repertoire remains unmatched to this day.
The Strad
At iClassical we are celebrating the anniversary by listening to a recording of Oistrakh playing the Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35 by Tchaikovsky with the Staatskapelle Dresden conducted by Franz Konwitschny.
The above performance is now available as part of a download, newly remastered at 24-bit/96kHz from the original tapes, from Presto Classical. This download also includes violin concerti by Brahms and Bach, in addition to Beethoven’s Romances for Violin.
