Passionate and stirring Chopin from Rafal Blechacz

This is the second of our posts in which we share with you an album that we have picked from our shelves and we believe is worthy of your attention.

Chopin: Polonaises Nos. 1-7

Rafal Blechacz (piano)

In this 2013 recording. Blechacz shows himself to be an interpreter of outstanding energy and refinement. He tends to favour fast tempi which bring out the dance in the Polonaises; even the famous Polonaise No. 6 in A flat major, Op. 53 ‘Héroïque’. The amount of vibrato that he uses suggests a tremendous emotional involvement with these works. Rafal Blechacz gives us an unashamedly romantic style of Chopin-playing. He shapes these polonaises in a highly personal manner not found in other versions. Some readers might find this to be an over-exaggerated performance with too much bravura but this style works for Blechacz who has clearly considered his approach to this work.

Perhaps not the recording to own if you are only going to have one version in your collection but this is a recording that I would not wish to be without.
