Pixis’ Piano Trios from Leonore Piano Trio

Pixis: Piano Trios

Leonore Piano Trio

Readers may be unfamiliar with the work of the German pianist and composer Johann Peter Pixis (10.02.1788 – 22.12.1874). His works are rarely heard in the concert hall and the only recording of Pixis that I previously owned was a Hyperion release by Howard Shelley in the Romantic Piano Concerto series. One of my colleagues has also referred me to a recording of the Oboe Sonata in G Major, Op. 35 performed by Paul Dombrecht (oboe) and Jos van Immerseel (piano).

On the basis of the current recording this neglect is hard to understand. The opening work on this CD, the Piano Trio No. 1 in E flat major ‘Grand Trio’ Op 75 is compulsive listening and I have found it hard to get it out of my head! The recording continues with Pixis’ third piano trio with its springy third movement and ends with his Trio Concertant No. 1; a set of variations on a theme from Georges Onslow’s, even more neglected, 1826 comic-opera The Pedlar.

All three works are played really well, the pianist Tim Horton excels and these performance are likely to be a continued source of delight. Recomended to any collectors who are willing to branch out a little.
