This new release from Jonas Kaufmann is his best disc for a number of years. Kaufmann is able to show off his tremendous vocal range from Wilhelm Meister (in Mignon) to Énée (in Les Troyens). Indeed the works performed on this Sony release cover a broad cross-section of the tenor repertoire of French Romantic opera.
The disc includes popular items such as the Flower Song from Carmen (Bizet), Roméo’s Ah! Lève-toi, soleil (Gounod) and Faust’s Merci, doux crépuscule (Berlioz) as well as a number of items that are unlikely to feature in Kaufmann’s stage repertoire. It is these latter items that make the release of special interest. Throughout one is aware of just how fine a voice Kaufmann has – indeed it is ageing rather like a fine wine! Perhaps the highlight of the collection is the duet, that Kaufmann shares with Ludovic Tézier, from Bizet’s Les pêcheurs de perles – as fine a performance as any in my collection. This is a disc that should be in the collection of anybody who appreciates the tenor voice – a 5 star recital if ever there was one.
