Danzi: Overture, Cello & Piano Concerto
Aurélien Pascal (cello), Nareh Arghamanyan (piano), Munich Chamber Orchestra, Howard Griffiths (conductor)
Howard Griffiths has recorded two rarely heard classical concertos composed by Danzi. Franz Danzi (15.05.1763 – 13.04.1826) was a German cellist, composer and conductor who was contemporary with Mozart.
On this recording Howard Griffiths is joined by Nareh Arghamanyan for the Piano Concerto in E flat major and Aurélien Pascal for the Cello Concerto in E minor and these two works are separated by a short overture. In case you are unfamiliar with the soloists, Nareh Arghamanyan is an Armenian pianist and she won the 2008 Montreal International Musical Competition. Aurélien Pascal is a young French cellist who, at the age of 19, won the Audience Prize and the Special Prize for the best performance of a concerto by Ernst Toch at the 2014 Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann under the patronage of Daniel Barenboim.
Beyond its rarity value¹, this disc will provide a great deal of listening pleasure through its beautifully played, well-balanced programme. An outstanding surprise and a serious contender for our Collectors’ Choice this month!
¹ I am only aware of one other recording of the piano concerto and none of the cello concerto.
